This is my first time posting here, so I hope I'm posting this thread in the right place.
I recently graduated with a bachelor of History from McGill, but now I am interested in going to school for architecture.
I was looking into schools here and there, and was thinking of going straight into a M.Arch. It seems like most schools though would prefer for you to have a bachelor in Architecture already.
So I guess my question is, do you think it is better for someone without a background in architecture to start from a B.Arch. or should I pursue an M.Arch. ?
False. Unless you're looking at M.Arch 2 (post-professional degree, which requires a B.Arch), and you shouldn't be, M.Arch 1 (professional degree) programs are open to those with any background. All that's required to apply to M.Arch 1 is a Bachelors (in anything), a few pre-reqs (physics, maths, intro to arch history).
You will need to apply for an M. Arch 1 (professional degree) program at the schools of your choice. These programs will most likely be 3.5 year programs which ultimately makes them better than 5 year B.Archs. Therefore I believe it is better for you to get an M. Arch.
It might help for you to take some summer career discovery courses at a school during this summer so that you may gain some type of portfolio-worthy work and LOR's and make you ready for your applications due in the beginning of next year/end of this year...
If you are studying in Canada, there is no longer any BArch programs. You might do a pre-professional bachelor degree in architecture which leads to a MArch. MArch is the only recognized professional degree these days. Some schools offer MArch programs to people without an architectural background. Sounds like applying directly to a MArch (only to schools that accept non-architectural grads) would be your best option. Doing the bachelor+masters will take longer and there is no guarantee that you will be automatically admitted to the masters in the end.
1. since you'll be entering without professional experience try to get into a m.arch programme with a co-op programme, it'll make things a bit easier upon graduation.
2. seek an m.arch in the city you want to work in the future.
I have another question. Is it more common for European schools to require a B. Arch for their M. Arch programmes ? The ones I have looked at seem to not offer any M. Arch 1's and most require a B. Arch before you can apply for their M. Arch programmes.
Does anyone know of any schools in Europe that offer an M. Arch 1 in English ?
archi. schools ? B.Arch. v. M.Arch.

M.Arch1 is right for you!
Hei thanks for the replies !
I'll keep looking around for schools that offer M.Arch 1.
I don't really intend on staying in Canada, but I was thinking of applying to UBC and Dalhousie.
Though after receiving my entire education in Canada, I'd prefer to go international...

A B.Arch from America is the equiv of a diploma in Europe.
A B.Arch in Europe is like a B.Sci/Art/whatev from America.
