i wonder what is the usual way of figuring out what an hourly rate should be when working on contract for a firm.
since the contractor would be responsible for taxes ,is there a factor that is applied to the hourly rate to take care of the taxes.
That is, assuming one is asking for say $15-$20 an hour, what would be a fair pretax hourly quote?
don't you think $15-$20/ hour is extremely low... what is your epxerience and whay are you wanting to do contract labor? Usually contract labor is more because the firm is not having to pay you benefits, etc.

Suggestions and comments appreciated
if you mark up your normal hourly rate by 25%, you should be ok
$15-$20 an hour? Ouch.
yoi,
It would help to know where you work. Even in different locations in the US, rates would differ depending on cost of living, taxes, etc.
