Portfolio feedback - last weeks

klarso

Hi Everyone,

My name is Kirsten. I have an undergraduate degree in Fine Art from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and am currently applying to MArch I programs. I am on the almost final version of my portfolio and am looking to get some "outside of my circle" feedback. I have been living in São Paulo, Brazil for the past two years and my portfolio reflects both work from Chicago and São Paulo.

Here is a link to my portfolio  - http://issuu.com/klarso/docs/klarsonportfolio1

* the first page is blank because I will be making it separately.

Schools I am applying to - GSD, Columbia, Yale, UPenn, UT Austin and Berkeley

thanks!

kirsten

Hi, I am an M.Arch 1 applicant, so please take my comments with a grain of salt :-) That said, I have seen a lot of portfolios, so I feel like I can give you some decent feedback. I think your portfolio is visually very strong (especially the final project), and has a nice feel compared to some other M.Arch 1 portfolios. I personally would reconsider the way your table of contents is designed. It's a really good way to organize things, but I think a sense of integration with the projects might work better. Just my two cents, I will be interested in seeing what others have to say.

You're going to make it in, maybe not to all the schools, but several.

Page 10, water section - think you have another image to include? It just seems weird that that's the only page with only text on it. Or perhaps you could consolidate page 10 and 11?

Also, I'm assuming you've considered how you plan on binding your portfolio, seeing as you have full spread full bleed images.

Looks good though! I'd personally scale down your Gill Sans (?) body copy - always find that fonts that are that round look silly when more than 9pts.

IMHO, the portfolio (49 pages) is too long.  I would suggest editing it down especially the community section.  I would consider cutting down to 24-28 pages. I truly do not think you need content pages later in the portfolio.

I also question the overall order - hand creation, studio projects, and community.  I would start with studio projects as this is why a graduate program in architecture is all about.

Not necessary, but some applicants include an abbreviated resume in their portfolio.

My thoughts!  Best.
