Elvis had Graceland. Brando enjoyed his own tropical island paradise. Wright presided over Taliesin West. Can you think of any other secluded nirvana-retreats?
i read suleyman was closely involved in the design of that big mosque in istanbul, turkey - forgot its name... and essentially kicked christianity out. hell, even the name changed to make it good and final.
snowi, was that your elementary school graduation thesis?
yes suleyman was closely involved building the mosque of suleyman in is tanbul in 16 th century, with his architect sinan. sinan designed and built +,- 1500 buildings under suleyman and others, including his viziers. these buildings are mosques, public baths, schools, bridges, lodges, etc. from the middle east to budapest. he goes by the name, suleyman the law giver or suleyman the magnificant for initiating the first ottoman constitutional laws and truly having a magnificant personality who was the first ottoman sultan loyal to one woman only, roxelenne.
before that, in 15 th century ottomans under mehmet the conquerer costantinople fell to turks and upon his entry to the city, he directly head to hagia sophia where nearly 300,000 christans were gathered expecting a sloughter. mehmet, instead declared before them that everyone was free to practice their religion freely and now can return their homes and ordered his army to cease looting immideatly.
he did declared hagia sophia be a mosque for his glory. there are many functioning churces in istanbul and head of the armenian churh is based there. even though hagia sophia turned a mosque it still kept the same name, thus 'mosque of hagia sophia'.. under secular republic it's neither but a museum.
to the contarary belief, ottomans were very liberal with other faiths and the turkish rule survived 8 centuries because of that. also was granted, safety and prosperity to 500,000 jews escaping from 16 th century spain.
i'm right here; with which part are you unhappy. i don't think i misrepresented the ottoman emperor (in a 2 sentence post). i believe he was an able designer and poet and candlestick maker, and that he had a lot to do with the design of his mosque with Sinan. Any hint of religious intolerance in the post is unfortunate and wrong - and i broke a fundamental rule of religion and politics, as well as faulty humor. Only that the primacy of one religion and state was effectively dismantled - it was a dramatic time, no?
the man was amazing - I'll keep it at that.
so was tamerlaine. my grade school posturing ends here as I'm finished working!!!
The Principality of Sealand is a micronation (a self-declared, unrecognised state-like entity) that claims as its territory Roughs Tower as well as territorial waters in a twelve nautical mile radius. Roughs Tower is a former Maunsell Sea Fort located in the North Sea six miles (10 km) off the coast of Essex, United Kingdom, at 51° 53′ 40″ N, 1° 28′ 57″ E.
Sealand is occupied by the family and associates of Paddy Roy Bates. The population of the facility rarely exceeds five, and its inhabitable area is 550 m².
Sealand is undoubtedly the world's best-known micronation, and although its claims to sovereignty and legitimacy are not recongnized by any traditional States, it is nevertheless sometimes cited in debates as an interesting case study of how various principles of international law can be applied to a disputed territory.
