I was thinking either just the staple or maybe a velo binding opposed to a comb but I'm coming from a non arch background so I thought I would ask. Is there a standard or common type that is typically used for this type of portfolio?
be careful with velo binding - the pages tend to fall out after a while. If you are getting this done at Staples/Kinko/print shop, spiral might be your best bet. These are of course the least expensive bindings.
If you have a bit more time and money and you have a digital portfolio, you can have it printed and bound online (ex: LuLu.com). this will look more professional and put-together, but might be a little complicated...
If you want to get more creative with it, there are many ways to do a DIY binding, just google it.

paper clips will do. or tape
Spit on the upper left corner, then have a dog gnaw on it until all pages stick together.
