question for Rice and UT Austin M Arch applicants

sashaplot

I'm wondering if anyone has encountered this problem:

While filling out the contact information for my referees for Rice and UT Austin, I discovered that they would not gain access to the recommendation form until AFTER I had submitted my part of the application, including a PDF of my portfolio (in the case of Rice) and my statements of intent. It seems ridiculous that my former professors would have to wait until their hectic exam period and that I would have to rush my portfolio and SOP just to accommodate the rules of the application. The other schools I'm applying to have separate referral forms that the referees can fill out at their convenience.

Did I miss something? Is there a way for referees to access online recommendation forms before the application is submitted?

You don't have to rush your SOP or portfolio. Just fill out the Apply Texas application. Once you do that they will set up a file for you and give you a UT ID number so you can check the status of you application online. You can upload your SOP directly to the sight and send in your portfolio separately. An email with instructions will be sent to the recommenders of your choosing so the sooner you fill out the application the sooner they get the email and have time to write you a letter of rec.

Thanks, Buff03— now I've finished my UT austin applytexas application as per your recommendation. However, Rice doesn't use ApplyTexas, so the problem remains—at least with that one school. Has anyone had any luck with the Rice online application, in terms of getting the system to contact our referees before you finish the application?

For future reference— Rice does indeed only send out referral solicitations after they've received your online application, including portfolio and personal statement.
