ap / diabase ... to help you put this in some perspective from someone way down the road in his career, i'm a licensed architect who earned an mba from a "famous northeastern business school" ... i worked in the development industry for a while and learned (and earned) a lot during that period ... eventually though, i realized i preferred the work of architecture and the company of architects ... today i lead a successful mid-sized design firm ... i am convinced i'm a much better architect today because of the time i spent as a 'client' of architects ... for damn sure, i have a better understanding of my clients and their pressures
quizzinal - interesting. I have similar urges and I am here almost exclusively to put myself in a position where I can develop my own projects on my own terms in my own firm. I have given myself 5 years here - by that time I should be ready...
many of the comments here assume that real estate developers do no market research. in fact, millions of dollars are spent by the organizations such as the national association of home builders to research and market their products to the consumer. the notion that the consumer is a lemming led to the developer's cliff is misguided i believe. the people are getting what they want.
in aesthetic terms per george santayana, the beauty we attribute to objects is not in the objects, but it is in us. The sense of beauty is subjective, a psychological phenomenon by which we project qualities of sensation and emotion into objects. this is why mr and mrs smith want a white picket fence and you like -fill in the blank.
