Visiting SF for the first time - Question for those familiar w. the town :
As non-car owning tourist :
-can I get from Merrit Lake in Oakland , to SF dwntown ,at all easily ? very easily? with difficulty ? was going to crash w. a friend of friend there, but if it is prohibitively far away i wouldn't
- Can I get from Dwtwn SF to Mill Valley at all easily ? would it be >$30 to take a cab?

Get to BART Lake Merrit station and catch any San Francisco Bound Bart train -

No No don't do that - in Downtown San Francisco on Sansom Street, you can take Golden Gate transit buses or take the the Ferry from the Ferry building.
