Don't know about GSD, but the Media Lab is - by design - not 'purely architecture.' It exists under the umbrella of the School of Architecture (as does Visual Arts), but it's explicitly cross-disciplinary and most of the research going on there is not about Architecture and not performed by Architecture professors *or* Architecture students.
GSD's Design Tech focuses on design computation, digital fabrication, robotics, etc. It's their version of University of Stuttgart's ITKE/ITECH, ETH Zurich's MAS DFAB, UCL's Architectural Computation and AA's EmTech & DRL.
MIT Media Lab / GSD Design Tech
Where do most architecture students who graduate from research / programs like this usually end up?
Do they end up pursuing something off tangent from purely architecture?
What's purely architecture?
They usually end up in media or as support/ specialized staff at an arch firm. Very few do "purely architecture"

Thank you for the responses.
I am also aware that GSD students can cross register at MIT for a semester (or two?)
