Seeking input on "monoptera"

Greetings,

I'm working on a research project regarding the continued use of the Roman monopteron (monopteros) in modern times. [See also the Greek tholos.] Vitruvius wrote about the form in Book 4, Chapter 8. But I am not certain of the modern terminology for the form. It seems obvious to me that the form is frequently employed as a design aspect on many official buildings in the U.S. (courthouses, capital buildings, university campuses), but could a gazebo also be considered a monopteron? What other time periods/regions/building types have made use of the form?

Thank you for you help!
