Carleton-undergrad

Hi, I'm new here, and currently a 12 grade student in toronto. Right now I have a couple of concerns about whether or not I'll be accepted and have some questions about the undergrad program at Carleton.

Right now, my current grades are:

Technological design-80%

Art-95%

French-90%

English-82%

Physics-85%

and.. Math-60%

I had a rough semester with math, and according to the website, 60% is the bare minimum mark I can have for Carleton to even consider me. But with that being said, my overall average is an 82%, the cut off range for the program is 74%-76%, and I have a pretty decent portfolio.

The lady I spoke to on the phone at Carleton said that the 60% won't really matter as long as my average is above the cut off range, but I still can't help but worry. So will these marks get me into the architecture undergrad program at Carleton or do I have to wait until next year and improve my math mark? And also, how does decision/elimination process work when they decide who gets in?

And second, how does the arch. program at Carleton work, schedule/class wise? How are the classes structured and would i have an entire semester of physics(like highschool -_-)? From what i've heard , alot of people have all-nighters in the studio and rarely get to socialize. I want to know whether most of my time will be in the studio or will I have time to go out and socialize with friends? Thanks.

^a 60% in any subject or even a 82% overall average will not even get you a phone call at waterloo.

As for Carleton, the minimum grade is used at first to trim the applicants. Those under the 75% average don't even get their portfolios looked at... straight to the garbage pile. If you're above this cut-off range then you at least have a shot since your portfolio will do most of the heavy lifting.  Grades are used afterwards if there are ties among applicants with so-so, but good-enough portfolios.

Carleton's programme is but a shell of it's former self thou, so try your hand at others, but as far as physics go... it's front-loaded with structure and physics in combination with heavy hand drawing and digital visual communication courses, all within the first semester. Weeks are typically steady 60+ hours plus a few overnights every once in while depending on your studio... which are 15hrs minimum per week by themselves. You make you're own schedule, if you're proficient and mature in your work, then you'll find time to socialise.

I worked part-time 25+ hours a week while at carleton while having that crazy 2 to 3 all-nighters per week studio work load you've might have heard. But I enjoyed every minute of it and still made time for a social life. You just gota love what you're doing.

hope it helps. Try and hit up Carleton's open house during the march break and speak directly to the professors and students.
