At the minute I am studying first year BSc Architecture in the UK, and am thinking about going on to specialise in conservational/ restorational architecture. I'd like to work on projects such as restoring ruins of castles or listed buildings.
However, I also like the idea of deigning my own buildings and having my own practice one day, i.e. I'd ideally like to have a practice that designs buildings for today as well as doing restorational projects.
I am wondering what I should study to do this? I see there is a Masters in Conservational Architecture at the University of Edinburgh. However, if I did that after my Bachelor and year practice could I become a fully qualified architect recognised by the RIBA, or would I have to study a straight Masters in Architecture? Also, would this Conservational degree be weaker in terms of employment than a degree in straight Architecture?
I'm looking at the topic from the other side of the pond - over here it helps to have the 'regular' architecture degree, but from specific programs that cover more specifically traditional architecture (Notre Dame) and/or experience working in offices that work specifically in the field. An architectural history degree/certification is also helpful to have in addition to the architecture (we have preservation degrees, but I haven't ran across anyone with one - a few with preservation concentrations within arch his or arch).
to 3tks point stateside, you could get an architectire degree and then work for firms that do restoration so you can still get a license, but the school should be more about traditional or actual practice and construction.....in other words avoid the "top schools", I imagine like the AA over there for Architecure. Find architecture schools whose faculty members actually do restoration.
