Maybe BIG should just hire some interns to build the prototype for free. Better yet, maybe one of the rewards should be an internship wherein you get to build it. How much would fresh grads be willing to pay for the opportunity and BIG on their resumes; $5k, $10k, $15k, more? $250 for a t-shirt sets the bar pretty high.
It makes me wonder if doing a kickstarter is simply the path of least resistance to get money for something like this. Surely there is some investor out there that would be willing to fund this entire steam ring project for the opportunity to have their name plastered on the side of it, and any associated patents, technology, etc.
