Having just sat thru an ARE I think this is a trick question in which I should write in a response all of the above and then some.
Masterbuilding. Design is a small part, but an important one.
architecture is a very hard profession and can be very challenging at times.
as an architect, i find the thinking, problem solving, designing, "p.m'ing", field visits, sketching, "architecturing" personally stimulating on a daily basis.
thrift finds and classic eames fill our tiny 80 y.o. bungalow near the city. lectures, exhibitions, 'new building openings', travels to exotic lands, experiencing 'cool' and historic sites is somewhat of a lifestyle when affordable.
leaving a mark for others to experience is personally gratifying.
after my daughter was born - realized architecture isn't everything, and feel i have real life now.

at this point in my career, i think architecture has become the lens through which i see everything - basically my version of a religion.
