HARVARD vs. COLUMBIA

^^

Hi,

This might seem like a stupid question to many of you and probably I'll get a lot of "each school has its own unique thing and they offer different things"... but in your own opinion... which school is better and WHY?

it's an irrational question left opened ended like that because the answer is specific and not necessarily the same for each individual

they both have open houses for prospective students coming up...you should go to each and see which is better for you.

@tagalong

Yes, I'm obviously trolling here and stated that the question is stupid.

I'm just interested in getting personal opinions and hopefully finding people who have similar interests to mine and consider one school better than the other to address those interests...

I'm an international applicant so I can't go to open houses.

as an alum from both (one as an undergrad of course), the name on the diploma does not matter so much any more. if you are able to get through one of them cheaply, the connections will be of help. but beyond that, if you don't have some GREAT connections in the architectural world right now, you perhaps might want to rethink your chosen career path. good luck.

but seriously, can these types of threads die already? i realize i am perpetuating it by posting, but i only did so after seeing other people are doing it and in case there is some SLIGHT chance that someone actually wants some help......

Actually CMNDCTRL I'm interested in both for my post-professional degree and would be interested in your experiences/what the programs focused on/etc....

@CMNDCTRL

These kind of threads are hard to die because there's people out there who need some help. At least, i do... I decided to apply to a biggie and I'm torn between GSD and GSAPP. They are both great schools but I'm interested in knowing what each one has to offer and why people choose one above the other. I'm interested in knowing the differences between the faculty at the two schools, the studios, opportunities, etc.

If you are international student, Harvard name is better regarded almost everywhere. That maybe something to have into consideration.

I went to both open houses last year and was really impressed by the accepted student's competence at Harvard compared to Columbia. Maybe it was just the urban design program though.

does anyone know if Columbia gives out money? I heard they don't and I might not apply because of that...:(

Yes, I was offered money when I applied but it's totally need-based. I heard it's not that common though...apparently I was poor enough (I only made about 1/3 of the tuition the previous year) :(

If you want to be an architect go to a state school. If you want to be a teacher, either one will do.
