science & math M.Arch Preq's

modelcitizen

hello,

im wondering if anyone in the nyc area can recommend an institution for taking the required calculus and physics courses for M.Arch applicants with liberal arts backgrounds.

every school i have contacted: nyc, the new school, columbia, cuny's....all have some bunk variation of a calculus course and/or no physics courses. the continuing ed courses are all professional development/training courses for the most part or arts programs.

where to go for basic science and math continuing ed in this city!?

try looking for non-degree or non-matriculated admissions instead of continuing ed. or maybe post-baccalaureate studies or "visiting student."

most colleges and community colleges should have the courses you are looking for.

thanks for taking the time to answer and look up that info, rueravignan. i appreciate it...but dude seriously, I am not spending $4,500 for one 3 point course at columbia.

but i will definitely try searching for post-baccalaureate and visiting student info!

thanks!

if you don't want to spend, community college is the way to go. i took calculus 1 and 2 at a community college in new jersey for about $500 per course.

The best way of doing it is contact your school you intend to go to and ask them about transfer credits from local community schools. Most of times Universities and Community Colleges have some kind of transfer programs so if you are enrolled in the University full time, you can just take the courses at the community college free of charge. I know many people that struggled with physics and calculus and found it easier at a community college.

Good luck!

Hey modelcitizen, thanks for sharing the info, I'm sort of in the same boat as you (liberal arts education, nyc, in need of math and physics classes, though maybe not til next year)

Would the General Physics class through BMCC suffice you think? Maybe it depends on the MArch program, but is that the one you are planning on taking? And in their math dept., would you say Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1 would do?

Thanks.

Brooksie,

update...the BMCC classes wont work for me because they are two semesters (includes a lab). I reached out to several of the programs I want to apply to and they all said that a physics course without a lab is perfectly fine.

so now I am trying to find one that is only one semester and that, if need be, I can just test into if i am lacking the math prereq's. I am currently going back and forth with CCNY now about what is available in the spring 2011

http://student.cuny.edu/cgi-bin/SectionMeeting/SectMeetColleges.pl

They had a 1 semester Phy course last spring, so...

As for calculus...I have not checked with admissions offices about the Analytic Geometry and Calculus 1, but I think it should suffice. I will look into it in 2011. bBt if the BMCC course is no good...CCNY or Hunter or CityTech should have something.

I'll keep you posted...
