Shands at the University of Florida, Master Plan/Bed Tower

Shands is transforming itself with a new 30-acre campus master plan that focuses on creating positive experiences for patients, staff and visitors. The Shands cancer hospital is the centerpiece of the first phase master plan, centralizing all cancer services under one roof to streamline patient experiences. A welcoming, family-focused environment offers diagnostic and therapeutic oncology services and a critical care center. The design of the hospital blends traditional materials in a modern vocabulary, reflecting the technologies and methodologies of the building’s function.

The healthy and healing environment features extensive access to natural light, rooftop gardens, sustainable material selection and low-impact lighting design. The mission of a healthy environment extends beyond hospital walls through the recycling of nearly 70 percent of a previous structure and 100 percent of a former parking garage during site preparation.
