This project is the re-imagination, reconfi guration and renovation of the front entry plaza of the largest Mitchell Lama public housing complex in North America, 3333 Broadway in West Harlem. The existing plaza had been repaved with asphalt and was configured such that the building entry was hidden and groups would congregate, creating unsafe conditions. The new plaza connects the building entry to the intersection of 135th Street and Broadway, 250 feet away, with a gently curving arc of landscaping in new low concrete planters. Pedestrian access to the building’s entry has been significantly improved, creating a safe, pleasant, well-lit and beautifully landscaped space for the building’s 5,000 residents to pass through each day.
