The Boca Chica is perched over an idyllic beach cove in the heart of Acapulco’s vibrant Caleta neighborhood. The 1950’s architectural gem, once a sweltering holiday hotspot, took a downturn when the city of Acapulco itself fell out of favor in the 1980’s, after which the building underwent 20 years of neglect. Although these years took their toll, most of the original features and furniture were intact when FR-EE and Fernando Romero acquired the building.
Reopening in January 2010, for the Mexican boutique hotel chain Grupo Habita, Boca Chica’s prominent atmosphere of tropical luxury was revived from the original structure, and modernized to suit contemporary standards of comfort. A grand entrance reception leads to a garden and ultimately to the large amoeba-shaped pool and grand restaurant housed in a Palapa with views across the Roqueta Island – a natural reserve in Acapulco.
The interior décor reflects the time period of the original hotel, riding on the wave of 1950’s nostalgia. Clean lines and strong geometric forms throughout are softened by a palette of vintage green, while the original terrazzo floors and lattice ‘celocia’ brickwork are carefully restored. The hotel was restructured to offer 30 guestrooms and 6 suites, each with private terraces and hammocks. Some of the rooms lead into private gardens, while the suites offer separate living rooms.
Boca Chica has further been upgraded to include a ground-floor gym that offers views towards the natural reserve, a full spa, poolside massage cabanas, a sea level marina - and the Palapa-covered bar and dance floor where guests can transport themselves back in time.
