Working with Perkins + Will, GLS designed a new sculpture courtyard and dining area for this 26-story Art Deco landmark designed by renowned architect Timothy Pflueger. Replacing a former service and utility court, the courtyard represents a vital addition to the area, especially given its adjacency to the extension of the Museum of Modern Art and Natoma Street. Bridging modern design with historic preservation, the new courtyard over a ground-level garage will accommodate Yelp’s new headquarters and two restaurants. The scope also includes street frontages. The planting, particularly the deciduous Gingko trees with their colorful leaves in the large main planter, will provide a sense of the seasons, while fruit trees in the smaller planters provide fresh produce for use by the street-level restaurants. The stone pavers, benches and planter boxes offer casual seating and give the courtyard a strong sense of its urban setting. The Carrera marble walls provide a backdrop for the planting and hide mechanical equipment that is part of the building’s modernized building infrastructure.
