Kanner Architects’ comprehensive PUMA retail branding initiative began with the specification of a red-and-white color scheme and continues through the integration of historic building facades with an extremely modern brand, stylish urban merchandise and modern interior architecture.
Among the hundreds of stores around the world, many feature frameless glass-and-steel façade systems. These systems open stores to sidewalks without negatively affecting the buildings that were chosen for a vintage aesthetic that connotes a lasting, dependable and distinguished experience.
Interiors are minimalist, each store’s design anchored by red rear walls that create a compelling focal point and draw consumers through the space. Wall and ceiling panels fold and flow around and over each other and the building’s existing structural elements, exposed in spots through strategic articulations and reveals. While alluding abstractly to PUMA’s leaping cat, the L-shapes create an arched path that leads through merchandising zones the client calls stories. Distinct product lines are illustrated with stock in glass vitrines and racks and shelves of metal and painted wood. The red and white panels combine with mirrors to activate and expand the space in an inexpensive and unobtrusive manner.
