Austin, TX
Converted gas station designed as part of the Global Design NYU Symposium in 2011.
The prairieHouse is not based on a romantic vision of the American Landscape, but the reality of what we have made. A Texaco station canopy is retrofitted for inhabitation, with living spaces tucked up safely under the broad shading roof, and a tall-grass prairie on top. Re-use and re-purposing of this ubiquitous, nearly invisible, and soon-to-be outmoded structure is a most basic form of recycling, and one that has greater impact than many active "greening" strategies.
