Healing Architecture For the Klinikum Klagenfurt, the project team developed a powerful, comprehensive architectural concept consisting of generous, open and airy spaces, designed to human scale. Direct views to a green landscape scenery and an abundance of natural light contribute to the recovery of patients and their wellbeing. As a result, the hospital has a positive effect on patients, visitors and staff alike. For a healthcare facility with particular complex medical-technical requirements, striking a balance between beauty, functionality and rehabilitation required a clear vision from the beginning.
Garden city along the river The vision of a generous, open architecture was manifested in the competition design and thus convinced jury and clients. Today, the 44,000 m² structure composed of three floors is organically embedded in the urban landscape of Klagenfurt. Like a small garden city, the medical center, with its transparent and inviting green courtyards, is reminiscent of the tranquil meadow scenery of the nearby Glan River.
Ecologically Certified The Klinikum Klagenfurt, designed as an “EU Green Building”, offers an airy and welcoming space to 4,000 hospital staff, 300,000 yearly out-patients and 80,000 in-patients. The project was awarded the Austrian Clients Award in 2011 and nominated for the internationally renowned Mies van der Rohe Award.
