CENTER FOR NATURE CONTEMPLATION IN PICOS DE EUROPA NATIONAL PARK (CANTABRIA)

After leaving the narrow gorge called Hermida the valley Liebana opens to the road that crosses the old rustic building named Sotama which belongs to the State and occupies some sport facilities. Around there, some traditional activities are installed as sawmills, a distillation plant of Liebana pomace oil and the garages of the public works machinery.

In this context, where the presence of Picos de Europa are actually located far away, is the emplacement of the interpretation center in the national park in Cantabria, being the first building of the valley, where the activity is oriented and the visitors are distributed in the area of Liébana.

The building seeks to participate, since the attitude of dispossession of the superfluous and taking from abstraction some of the approaches of modern architecture in the recuperation of natural and noble materials used in constructive tradition of the valley: wood and stone.

Morphologically the Building is conformed by the superimposition of two elements; a trapezoidal stone platform, based on the field with a size of 80 and 60 meters.
All the facades of this platform, including openings and ramps are formed by native stone gabions.

The second element is a rectangular prism created by successive addition of wooden planks. The plank positions are similar to those the dryers of sawmills use in the region, and they work as a lattice of wooden slats.
Being consistent with the external image, in the interior of the building are housed  the thematic rooms for Exhibitions. From there, the platform of stone, the visitors can also contemplate the river Deva.
The high volume protects, in different levels, the audio visual  and conference rooms, the offices and administrative units.
Over the roof is where thermal panels for heat production for the underfloor heating system feeding are supported.
