The project is located next to the Otsuka Station in Tokyo, Japan, and aims to create a gym that combines a Neo-Chinese style for the client. The design concept originates from the client's request: to combine the tranquility of tea ceremony with the physical conditioning of Pilates.
The design eschews the heavy equipment and cold atmosphere of traditional gyms, opting instead to use wood as the primary material. The design incorporates a cross-jointed structure of wood and wood, creating a warm and inviting space. At the same time, the design integrates the serenity and harmony of the tea ceremony culture, giving the entire gym a natural, smooth texture and atmosphere that is conducive to relaxation and exercise.
In the design, wooden joints are not only decorative but also serve as an important structural language that runs throughout the space. From storage shelves to the partition walls on the facade, and up to the atrium, the wooden design forms a continuous visual thread. The texture of the wood brings a natural warmth, while the cross-jointed wooden structure achieves a harmonious combination of multiple functions. In the area between the Pilates zone and the equipment zone, the wooden joints are ingeniously combined with the mirrors in the Pilates area, providing a soft spatial separation while also incorporating a three-dimensional storage design on the back of the mirrors to serve the equipment zone.
In the atrium section, the use of wooden joints further enhances the sense of depth and openness of the space. Through this design, wooden joints not only enhance the aesthetic appeal of the space but also greatly optimize its practicality, allowing the different areas of the gym to have both independence and a natural flow and transition.
