Ho Chi Minh City, VN
Every house has a life of its own, and House of Cholon is a vivid example of preserving the architectural and cultural values of Cholon. While many old buildings are demolished to make way for new constructions, the House of Cholon project by Archiro Vietnam took a different approach: to preserve and renovate the house instead of tearing it down. This decision not only embodies the preservation of traditional beauty but also represents a sustainable architectural solution for the environment.
Preserving Old Houses – Minimizing Environmental Impact
Demolishing an old building erases the marks of time and generates a substantial amount of construction waste, including concrete, steel, wood, and other materials. By choosing to renovate the House of Cholon instead of rebuilding, Archiro Vietnam has significantly reduced the amount of waste produced, helping to alleviate pressure on landfills and reduce negative impacts on the ecosystem.
Moreover, renovation saves valuable resources by limiting the need for new building materials like cement and steel—materials that have energy-intensive production processes that release a significant amount of CO₂, polluting the air and contributing to climate change. The House of Cholon exemplifies how preserving old houses can also be an effective method of environmental protection.
Creating a Living Space That Reflects the Culture and Spirit of Cholon
Cholon is not only known as a hub for the Chinese community but is also a place of cultural convergence, where every building carries its own cultural imprint. House of Cholon is the home of a Vietnamese family, tied closely to traditional Vietnamese living styles but harmoniously blending into the area’s multicultural community. The design team at Archiro tackled this challenge by preserving the original structure of the house and renovating only the deteriorated areas, thus creating harmony between the past and present.
The unique characteristics of Cholon are revived through distinctive yellow tones, decorative cement tiles, white breeze blocks, and nostalgic jalousie windows. These are not only inherited elements but also a way to protect traditional architectural features in a modern context, bringing a familiar sense of warmth to local residents.
Intelligent Design for Comfort and Sustainability
The interior of House of Cholon has been restructured with a “semi-open” layout, creating a cool, spacious feel while still maintaining privacy for each functional room. Archiro applied wind-capturing solutions to take advantage of natural airflow, complemented by ample greenery, keeping the house cool without excessive energy use. This approach ensures a comfortable living space while minimizing environmental impact.
With a focus on natural light, greenery, and eco-friendly materials, House of Cholon offers a gentle and relaxing living space that fits modern urban lifestyles while honoring traditional cultural values.
A Spirit of Preservation – A Sustainable Solution for the Future
House of Cholon conveys a clear message that Archiro Vietnam wants to share with the community: preservation and renovation are not only about retaining old values but also about protecting the environment and promoting sustainability. Renovation instead of demolition helps reduce construction waste and allows for resource reuse, contributing to an environmentally friendly urban landscape.
Archiro hopes that House of Cholon will inspire the community, helping people realize that renovation can be an economically sound choice that is also environmentally friendly and culturally enriching. In every project, Archiro not only creates living spaces but also preserves stories, memories, and identities that are an essential part of the city.
