Shoreline Dwelling

Shoreline Dwelling serves as a retreat for an urban family and their guests.  The design is a modern interpretation of a traditional cabin: a simple but dynamic wood-clad box and sheltering roof with ample connection to the outdoors. A framework of “expanding” and “sheltering” spaces is choreographed in a sequence of episodes, grounding and amplifying relationships between building and landscape.  Spatial expansion and contraction under the sloping roof provide a dynamic and interiorized landscape including cocoon-like bedrooms and expansive living areas. An open riser stair extends vertically engaging a stand of towering pines beyond. Throughout each day, natural light reflects from the lake into the living areas illuminating wooden ceilings and spaces within with dappled light, ever changing with the weather, time and season.
