Situated on an estuary with breathtaking views, this 1978 "contemporary coastal" dwelling was taken down to its studs. Inside, updated mechanicals and insulation created a more energy-efficient envelope. Outside, a new standing-seam, coated aluminum roof, exterior walls re-clad with Western red cedar planks, create a very taut, clean, and quiet appearance. The mass of the building remained the same, but the interior was reorganized, windows were enlarged, walls were removed to open the floor plan at the ground level. The architects engaged in a process of editing what was already there; since they couldn't add, they subtracted. For example, removing storage space in the entry, elongated views through the kitchen. The new Corten steel fireplace is a structural element that enhances the minimalist open plan construct. Walnut casework adds warmth throughout the house, while the white plaster acts as a crisp backdrop. The palette remains quiet, in an attempt to highlight the landscape beyond. Natural light is brought into the interior through enlarged openings and skylights and emphasis is given to sight lines that continue out towards the decks and water beyond. The site's stunning views have been unveiled from within.
