Istanbul, TR | New York, NY
A hundred-year old apartment building in Istanbul’s crowded neighborhood Kurtulus underwent a major renovation by preserving historic shell and floor slabs intact. The users were a graphic designer and a ceramic artist couple. They wanted to take out most of the existing non-structural partitions to give way to an open floor plan. New touch to existing building was kept as invisible as possible yet adding the new simple, fresh aura to spaces. The original brick load bearing walls and cast-iron beams were exposed after a careful surface cleaning. Light pastel colors were applied to most other walls to help strengthen the idea of flow of loftlike spaces to each other.
