Sunglass House

Inspired by the Ed Ruscha painting, “Malibu = Sliding Glass Doors,” this design overlooking the Pacific Ocean acts as a viewing/veiling device between the seer and sea. The house is compressed between a series of retaining walls and a series of freestanding glass facades that slip past the edges of the volumes and reflect the landscape. Cantilevered concrete volumes plug into a circulation spine, connecting the two floors and the children’s wing to the master suite. Voids and clerestories puncture the circulation space bringing natural light inside the house. The living space opens wide onto a terrace facing the ocean.
