Hibser Yamauchi Architects (HY Architects) was established in 1977. The firm provides comprehensive architecture, interiors and planning services. We deliver comprehensive services for renovations, modernizations, additions and new facilities. Our firm also offers campus master planning, facilities assessments and interior design services. HY Architects has grown from a small local firm to a major design force in California from their headquarters in Oakland and offices in Davis and Los Angeles.

Education – HY Architects is one of the leading firms in K-12 planning and design in California. The firms works with district both large and small, urban, suburban and rural. We also provide services to higher education institutions. HY staff is heavily involved in the Coalition for Adequate School Housing (C.A.S.H.). Marcus Hibser, principal, was the co-chair of the High Performance Building Strand for the annual C.A.S.H. conferences in 2014 through 2016 and has been a leading presenter on various educational topics annually for many years.
Housing – HY Architects provides design and planning expertise on commercial, housing, and mixed‐use projects. From new development and construction, to rehabilitation and renovation, our insight and conscious design makes each project stand peerless and unique. Healthcare – Commencing work for Kaiser Permanente in 1978, HY Architects has continuously provided services to Kaiser and has expanded its healthcare practice to other major healthcare entities in California. The firm has worked on most every type of healthcare project in both acute and ambulatory care settings. Under the leadership of principal Ken Yamauchi, the practice has expanded to FQHC and community clinics, now being one of the top firms in the California providing services to both small and large entities.
Public/Institutional – HY Architects is a trusted partner with many public and institutional entities. Working with cities, counties, state and federal agencies, the firm’s work ranges from individual projects to task orders under on-call and IDIQ contracts. Projects are located on various sites throughout California and focus on small renovations, tenant improvements, space conversions, additions and new construction.
Interiors – Commencing as a support service to HY Architects’ architectural services, the firms’ interiors group has become its own service area. While the interiors group continues to supports all architectural projects, it now provides services to healthcare, commercial, educational, and public clients directly. Providing complete space planning, interior design, FF&E coordination, HY Architects follows clients’ design guidelines and creates workplace environments that reflect their organizational culture.
Access Compliance – HY Architects has a dedicated division to providing access compliance services to owners. This group offers ADA Plan Review, On-Site Inspection of Completed Construction, ADA Compliance Reporting Services, CASp Surveys, ADA Self-Evaluation/Transition Planning and Barrier Removal Mitigation. The team has been access compliance plan checkers for the Division of the State Architect for many years under an on-call contract and is sought after to address compliance issues for all types of buildings and campus environments.
Sustainability – HY Architects has been designing sustainable buildings since the inception of their practice. Being good stewards of the environment, assisting clients in saving valuable operating dollars and creating learning opportunities around sustainable design for always been part of the firm’s philosophy. Focusing on both LEED and CHPS protocols, HY Architects works with all clients to incorporate sustainable design solution into their projects.
