In 2002, Open Source Architecture (www.o-s-a.com) was founded by Chandler Ahrens (Washington University in Saint Louis), Eran Neuman (Tel Aviv University), and Aaron Sprecher (McGill University). As such, Open Source Architecture has been organized as an architectural group that undertakes projects ranging from industrial design and exhibition design to residential, commercial and institutional buildings. At Open Source Architecture, staff and researchers are engaged in diverse expertise considering that architectural design is foremost linked to our current technological conditions. The main emphasis is placed on investigating new design processes, fabrication and material experimentation made available through the accelerated changes occurring in our contemporary culture, technological and environmental conditions.
From experimental structures (The Hylomorphic Project, West Hollywood) in the field of structural optimization to large urban installations (ParaSolar, Tel Aviv), exhibition design (Evolutive Means, New York City) and residential buildings (Slrsrf, Culver City), Open Source Architecture focuses on the combinatory relation between the architectural object and its environment, being natural, artificial or even virtual. This approach to architecture recognizes the necessity to reconsider the nature of the architectural object as a dynamic system that stems from transdisciplinary collaborations with experts in structural and civil engineering, computer sciences, environmental design, and manufacturing among others. As a result, Open Source Architecture acts as a decentralized design and research organization with offices in St. Louis, Tel Aviv and Los Angeles; and experts in Europe, Asia and the United States.
