This week we went to visit BDP at their office in Clerkenwell. They took us on a tour around their beautiful office in Brewhouse Yard, and told us a little more about the people and culture behind the interdisciplinary, world-renowned practice.
Location?
A converted brewery building in the heart of Clerkenwell
When did the practice start?
1961 in Preston
How many staff?
Our London studio is BDP’s largest, with an interdisciplinary community of 350 architects, engineers, designers, and urbanists
Company ethos?
Placemaking for a Modern World – We create outstanding places for people and put the user at the heart of everything we do
Current projects?
We work on large scale projects across all major sectors such as the new children’s hospital in Dublin and Westgate, a new retail led quarter in Oxford city centre. But also smaller projects such as BOXPARK in Croydon, a refurbished food and retail area at Paddington Station and the recently revamped National Army Museum. We have just completed a new HQ for Northamptonshire County Council which we are very excited about.
Have you always been at this studio?
We moved to our studio in Clerkenwell from the West End in 2003.
Favourite part of the studio?
The hub – it’s our flexible meeting / restaurant / event / exhibition space. Every last Friday of the month it transforms into the BDP bar which is hosted and decorated by different groups from around the studio.
Favourite nearby coffee shop?
Again…our hub café serves up the best coffee in Clerkenwell – The lovely Robert knows how every single member of staff likes to take theirs
Do you eat lunch together?
Yes we have a subsidised restaurant that serves breakfast and lunch. We eat together in the hub or spill outside to the piazza on sunny days.
Pets allowed?
no pets allowed
Most played song/artist/musician?
We only play music in the print room where Barry and Rob can be found singing along to Radio 2
Favourite building in London?
We think our own studio at Brewhouse Yard has everything that is needed for a modern dynamic workforce and gives other London buildings a run for their money
