As part of the riverwalk development, the Water Works site offers an ideal location for the absent Museum of Contemporary Art in Tampa, MoCAT. With the new Tampa History Center as one of the Riverwalk's termination points and the Tampa Art Museum in its middle section, the end of the Water Works District is needing the cultural component and drawing force that a museum can offer.

The design grounds itself on the landscape of the adjacent park, addressing the existing natural spring and connecting to the Riverwalk by sculpting the land, informing the overall building design.

Interpreting the site as a void along the Riverwalk project, the design's concept is Connectivity Through Voids. Exploring varying degrees of sectional and spatial qualities.

Located at the heart of the project, the Main Space is a multifunctional space, serving as circulation, performance area, movie theatre, sculpture display and gathering area. Here is where all the spaces collide.

The Sculpture Garden expresses the juxtaposition of old and new; it gives the users an opportunity to experience the exterior of the existing building against the new intervention.

The south galleries are located above the classrooms, creating a rhythm derived from the interaction between the building and landscape. The geometry of the building is further emphasized by its materiality and site orientation.
