Primary school for special education in The Hague Moerwijk. 2,020 m2
This BENG school is part of the urban renewal process of the Moerwijk-Oost reconstruction district in The Hague. The original urban design was created by Dudok. His influence on architecture is clearly visible. With its yellow brick, dark plinth, characteristic gable and entrance canopy, the school blends in with the surroundings. At the same time, it acquires its own character through the differentiated structure of the building volume, which also gives the playground a human scale. This square is lined with a thick green hedge and fits in with the green character of the district. The applied visible green roofs, water storage and PV panels help to realize the sustainability ambitions.
The importance of exercise and physical activity for the specific target group has been a guiding principle in the spatial design. The gymnasium, games hall and multifunctional space are centrally positioned in the building and there are short walking routes between group rooms and the various playgrounds. The lower level classrooms open directly onto their own playground. Attention is also paid to creating a professional, pleasant environment for the teachers; on the first floor with a private roof terrace.
