Moving the train station in Florence from outside the center city gives new possibilities as well as obstacles to overcome. The new train station proposed by Sir Norman Foster sits outside the center of the city in the San Jacopino neighborhood.
Catty-corner to the train station is a large empty site, a literal hole in the ground. It is here I propose a large multi-use program to serve the train station and to bridge the gap between the city center and the train station. Florence, being a pedestrian city, it is important that the site embraces the urban fabric of Florence.
The sites respective buildings and public spaces are each split up into three different typologies
respectively. The three public space typologies are Italian piazza, urban thoroughfare, and park space. The three building types are residential, public and commercial. The buildings are oriented with the more public conscious programs towards the train station and along the way to the center of the city, while the residential building and offices are tucked away giving more privacy and intimacy
