Gimbel’s Observational Library explores the relationships within communities by encouraging the user to deviate from a predetermined habitual path. By embracing an unknown psychogeographical movement, the user is more open to initiating interactions with strangers to aid their understanding of their surroundings. The library is organized by the structure of the books and transistions from analog to digital as the occupant ventures further into the space. By entering the space, the occupant enters a temporary deviation from their expected path and destination. Once they ascend to the first level of the site, they are greeted with a relaxed atmosphere that invites the occupant to read, write, people-watch, and interact with other visitors. The use of an atypical site, the extension of thresholds, and the activation of refraction vs. reflection stimulates communication through both analog and digital means to create respect for the public realm.
