A museum, gallery, and workspace is proposed as a memorial to Kikuo’s work and legacy. The museum and gallery will provide art classes to the people of the town while offering residences for visiting artists who will have access to the gallery and workshop. The theater placed in the building aims to emphasize this intimate relationship between the population and their community. The design of the space revolves around the central structure of the theater, which expands and retracts to divide the first floor or create a large, continuous gallery space. A series of panels are used as partitions between flexible spaces. This allows for a shifting relationship between private and public. The spaces available to the community are located on the first floor and the more private spaces, such as the director’s office and artist residences, are on the second floor.
