Pass Christian, Mississippi, was severely impacted by Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Much of the town was either washed away or damaged beyond recognition. A vacant corner lot in the center of town facing the Gulf Coast is the temptation of every developer in the area.
The local farmers and crafters in the region currently meet in Memorial Park in The Pass and would greatly benefit from having a permanent structure to gather in. The empty corner lot appeals to many local residents as being the perfect place to host the Market.
In 2011 architecture students from universities across the country presented designs intended to capture the imagination of the property owner, local farmers, and notable architects.
This particular design has three parts.
1: A promenade along the Scenic Drive with a view of the Gulf Coast. This has columns matching other public buildings in the town. The architectural basis for the building type is a Greek Stoa, however it has been applied here in a more contemporary style. This portion is intended to be used throughout the week, even when the Market isn't open.
2: An exposed structure stretches from the Stoa over a permeable plaza. This section is sheltered from the gulf winds by the Stoa. The exposed structure covers a plaza where the farmers can directly drive their farm vehicles onto and sell from.
3: A retractable awning is stored under the roof of the Stoa, however on extremely sunny or even rainy days it can be unrolled over the plaza to ensure that the Market happens regardless of the weather.
