Transparency Studio

This studio looked at how to use transparency through materials to create unique experiences. Portland, Oregon's block size is known for being relatively small, but because of this site's proximity to the few super blocks in the city, I wanted to break up my site further. This separation created what I refer to as the kaleidoscope hall where treatments are used to create different layers of color, blending reality and illusion. An innovative approach to the scheme of the building is also to create a drawer-like system that allows the living room of the loft style apartments to expand, furthering the kaleidoscopic events within the split. To further the illusion, the traditional vertical slat system used for protection from heat gain and enhanced privacy was used to create a reflection of what is across the street. The image, however, is only whole at specific angles.
