Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center and Park

From 2008 to 2016, Deborah Nevins & Associates designed and oversaw the implementation of the landscape at the 40-acre Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center, with architects Renzo Piano Building Workshop. Occupying 85% of the SNFCC’s total area, Stavros Niarchos Park is a complement to the National Library of Greece, also located at the SNFCC: a living repository of the nature of the region, with plantings of 1,500 trees, 128,000 shrubs and perennials, and 164,000 grass plugs. The park was designed by DNA, and all the drought-tolerant Mediterranean plants were specified by DNA to make a landscape that “speaks Greek,” capturing the quintessential character of Greek landscape through plant choice and planting design. The result is an accessible, sustainable site with a rich variety of flora and numerous sites for gathering, play, and recreation. DNA’s design has received numerous awards, including a European Garden Award First Prize for Innovative Concept or Design of a Contemporary Park or Garden, and the International Green Roof Association’s International Leadership Award for Landscape Design.
