The challenge of this property was to find a way to "settle" a traditional house in a landscape with sharp grade changes. We also wanted to create an effortless, modern landscape as a contrast to the house. With the simple device of hedges, the space round the house is defined, while at the same time the hedges serve to mediate between a flat lawn and a rolling hillside. The Carpinus hedges that create an outdoor room, and the lawn steps leading to it, make another grade transition from the house to the hillside, simultaneously creating an intriguing focal point and vista.
