Nestled in the forested slopes of the Sierra Nevadas, this rugged
yet majestic lakeside mountain retreat makes minimal impact on the land.
Having designed this client’s vacation home in Hawaii, de Reus Architects was contracted to craft their newest retreat alongside Lake Tahoe. Working around existing Ponderosa Pines and Western Red Cedars, this four bedroom two-story home’s main gathering areas were placed on the upper level to take advantage of lake views. Covered and open-air decks provide extensive outdoor living for the family.
The architectural design utilizes a traditional gable roof supported by timber trusses with large overhangs. Modern and durable exterior finish materials were selected including natural tree trunk columns, blackened steel railings and Ironwood handrails. Site drainage swales with a Japanese influenced rock pattern control drainage at the base of the house.
The interior pulls influences from the exterior palate with grey-stained rift, sawn white oak doors and cabinets, light grey wide plank oak floors, blackened steel hearth and trim details and the split face grey limestone carried across the expansive fireplace surround.
