Re-imagining Mies' Post Office Building - Spring 2015

Since USPS was in monetary crises and suffering of the massive debt there was an urgent need for an immediate solution.

Mies' Post Office Building,

In my project, the service of the post office will remain as it is as well as conserve the facade of Mies, However,  I will improve it by adding a new value such as bartering center.

This Bartering center is based on the concept of bringing the public inside the building where people can exchange their personal items, goods, and jewellery, like gold and diamond, and buy other's items too by bidding on them.

The auction center will be in the middle of the building, and people can enter and exit from the any door, and bring more people to participate in the auction.Showroom will be open to public so they can see and decide for their items before bidding time.

How I designed the new service space?

I opened up the entire building for public by creating indoor street to help people cross the building from the four directions for their convenience especially in the cold weather and that will make them feel more welcomed. The streets inside the building are surrounded by two-level stadium which gives people a chance to watch a live auction easily and encourage them to participate in it. Also the bidding will be scheduled in a specific times and days then it will be advertised by media and letters to reach the maximum of people.

This Bartering Center will facilitate the interface between the merchants and buyers through Technology, and the concept derives from understanding the relationship between the formal and informal form of exchange.

In my project, I wanted to develop the place to become more contemporary for better work and more profits, at the same time you can see Mies in it through using the glass and steel mainly, in addition to the open and flexible space inside.

I made the ceiling from glass in a convex form. This design can show the wonderful reflection of the showroom and surrounding area which enhance the beauty of the place and can guarantee more public into it, and support my main concept of having indoor city street. The glass ceiling with the bright light and the colorful railing of the stadium, which is reflected on the ceiling, can create a very warm environment comparing to the old one.

My main approach for the design was to add a value to the existing building to alter someone’s behavior through contemporary approach.
