Long Island City, NY
dD+P designed the renovation of this historic railroad facility, raising and lengthening existing canopies, adding new elevators, stairs, and ramps, and restoring the building’s public interiors and pedestrian subway. Extensive coordination with the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO) was handled by the firm throughout the process. Modifications to existing fabric and new structures on the proposed island platform were explored and drawings that sensitively address the historic fabric in accordance with accepted SHPO procedures were developed. Approval from NJ Transit’s Department of Community Affairs (DCA) was also required. A key challenge was balancing updated code requirements with design sensitivity required for the historic structure.
