The LEAF is a shade structure and pavilion located in Durham, NC at the center of Durham Central Park. It acts as a stage for small concerts, a place for screening community movies, or a place for parents to sit and watch their children play in the park. It was built in coordination with BuildSense, Studio B Architecture, and Ellen Cassilly Architects as part of a Design/Build studio with North Carolina State University's College of Design.
The curved structure plays with the idea of changing sun angles, creating a unique experience from many different perspectives and times of day and year. Vertical fins line the curved structure, providing shade, security, and a unique, enjoyable atmosphere inside and outside the pavilion. A team of 12 graduate students designed, fabricated, and constructed all aspects of the pavilion during the 10-week summer semester, finishing in August 2011.
