Culver City, CA
Our focus has been on creating entertainment spaces in these beachfront residences. We have carefully designed a sunken covered outdoor living room, complete with a landscape buffer to minimize street noise. The two buildings, although similar in aesthetics, detailing, and materiality, have slight variations in their roof designs. The western building features a distinct gable roof, while the eastern building showcases a shed roof with a ribbon window that captures the morning sun. In our design process, we prioritized the circulation within the homes, resulting in a straight run configuration for the stairs, accompanied by a large skylight system above. By strategically positioning the stairwell along the interior walls that separate the adjacent buildings, we ensured maximum light and ventilation throughout the space. The linear layout of the homes allows natural light to penetrate even the most secluded areas, creating a harmonious flow of air and light from the ground level to the top floors. To embrace the concept of vertical living, we placed the public living space on the third floor, providing additional volume and incorporating the roof design within the space. The open floor concept on this level seamlessly connects the kitchen, dining area, living room, and balcony. On the second floor, we have continued the theme of connectivity by including private balconies in the bedrooms, allowing residents to fully enjoy the beachside environment.
