Fire is the fundamental concept of my design. Fire and culinary are one in the same when it comes to the art. The sculpture of each building creates soft elegant curvature but together their form is a strong powerful fire.
Placement of each individual building was related to its context. I saw each street as individual building types. On Allyn St. which is a bar street I decided to place a bar. Union St. is a high traffic area in which I decided to place my restaurant, main teaching kitchen and demo kitchens, as well as my lecture hall. Asylum has the best view to Bushnell Park which is where I decided to place my bakery, pastry kitchens, and student lounges. Finally I placed my admin building directly in the center adjacent to the surrounds site buildings to allow for maximum observation.
Connections were created between important areas such as teaching kitchens and study lounge areas. These connections also serve as standing areas where exciting views can be observed. In terms of egress my secondary means of egress for each building is located on the crosswalks allowing each floor to connect exteriorly to the ground.
Finally I wanted to create an Icon in downtown Hartford. To do so I illuminated the backs of each flame to further accentuate my concept to, and to give meaning to their name the Burning Towers. This illumination, form, and concept define these buildings truly as a campus of its own entity and I believe it makes a powerful statement in the Art of Culinary.
