The renovation of this classic eight room Park Avenue apartment, was transformed into an elegant classically inspired family-friendly home. The original traditional inspired apartment was defined by small rooms which included formal and informal living parlors and dining rooms. The design challenge with this active family of four was to open the floor plan, separating public and private living spaces, creating a large family area furnished with comfortable furniture, within a library aesthetics, where the family can gather, have dinners, and enjoy their time together which would also be connected to a new Kitchen. All of this inspired by the contemporary lifestyle of active New York City families.
The family requested the design be inspired by the traditional and classical elements of the building’s architecture and to design the spaces proportionally to incorporate the casual lifestyle that they enjoy. Thus, the separation of public and private was further divided by formal and casual living areas.
The architects enhanced all of the ceilings with classical plaster moldings, using moldings to visually raise the height of the ceilings in the beautiful Entry Foyer and in the Living Room creating a unique coffered ceiling to balance the proportions of the room. Extensive use of carefully detailed wood cabinets, wainscoting and trim abound throughout the apartment, relating to the function of each room. Large wood pocket doors can separate the living areas to enhance the separation of adults and children. The Family Room becomes the hub of activity, detailed with mahogany wood cabinets, wainscoting, floors and beams, sophisticated AV systems throughout, and specially glazed windows to soften the window exposures. The adjacent Kitchen is decorated with marble floors and counters, beautifully crafted wood cabinets, and state-of-the-art appliances and plumbing fixtures.
The architects transformed this worn and dated apartment into an elegantly designed home, creating a timeless quality of life for this active New York City family.
