A Library of Water

As a part of the city council’s scheme for a 2030 Sustainable Sydney, Southern Sydney Green Square plays an important role to transform our city. Hence, scheduled to be constructed by 2018, Green Square Library and Plaza is a key catalyst anticipated to place make Southern Sydney. The heart of future Green Square, used by over 48,000 residents and a workforce of about 22,000 people. The challenge lies within the geographical conditions of Green Square and the competition site itself.

Southern Sydney is currently going through a subdivision of its post-industrial landscape. The outcome of urban grain refinement, is the utilization of “urban voids” or often regarded as “left over spaces” that were formed during the industrial period of Green Square.

During the refinement process, a list of complex urban void irregularity and building planning were identified. This suggests the land has gone through a series of transformation, with layers of history overriding one and the other without a line of continuity.

A Library of Water is a design emerged from the continuation of geographical history. By providing three ancillary programs of water to the design, the library aims to establish a connection between past and future, as well as land and people.
